Protests broke out in Nairobi on Tuesday as outrage grows over the death of 31-year-old teacher Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody after his arrest in Homa Bay County.
Ojwang was arrested on June 6 for allegedly defaming Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Lagat. He was transported over 350 kilometres to the Central Police Station in Nairobi, where he was found dead just two days later. His death has sparked renewed public anger over police brutality and calls for justice and accountability in Kenya’s security sector.
On Tuesday, protestors gathered around Nation Centre on Kimathi Street in Nairobi’s Central Business District, demanding answers and action. Police responded by firing teargas to disperse the demonstrators, who held banners denouncing extrajudicial killings and calling for reforms within the police force.
The case has triggered widespread condemnation, with many questioning why Ojwang was moved such a long distance and what exactly happened during his time in police custody. Human rights groups, civil society organisations, and political leaders have all demanded an independent and thorough investigation.
So far, two officers—Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Talaam and Constable James Mukhwana—have been arrested in connection with Ojwang’s death. Investigations are being led by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU).
Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Lagat, whose name has been repeatedly mentioned in the ongoing probe, has voluntarily stepped aside from his role to allow for an impartial investigation. In a statement issued on June 16, Lagat said he made the decision “in the good and conscious thought” of his responsibilities as Deputy Inspector-General and would remain out of office pending the outcome of the investigation.
Pressure continues to mount on authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Former Chief Justice David Maraga is among the public figures calling for Lagat’s arrest and prosecution, saying the justice system must send a clear message against abuse of power.
The case has brought the issue of police brutality back into national focus and is expected to drive further public demonstrations in the coming days.
