A police officer who allegedly shot a face mask vendor in Nairobi has been arrested, according to a statement released by the National Police Service (NPS). The officer will face investigation and prosecution, following orders from the Inspector-General of Police.
The incident, which sparked public outrage, involved a confrontation between police and informal vendors, one of whom was reportedly selling masks. After the shooting occurred, immediate action was taken by police leadership to ensure accountability.
“Following this incident, the Inspector-General National Police Service has ordered the immediate arrest, investigation and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested,” the NPS said in its statement.
While the police did not disclose the identity of the officer or specific details about the incident, they emphasized that the case is being treated seriously and that due process will follow. The NPS also made it clear that any acts of police misconduct will not be tolerated.
In the same statement, the police service strongly condemned the actions of a separate group described as “goons” who were allegedly armed with crude weapons and involved in confrontations. The NPS warned that such individuals will be dealt with according to the law.
"The Service is committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting lives and property. Those engaging in lawlessness—whether civilians or members of the Service—will face the full force of justice," the statement continued.
The shooting has raised renewed concerns over police conduct and use of force, especially in crowded urban areas where vendors and officers frequently interact. The NPS has promised full transparency as investigations continue.
No updates have been provided on the condition of the injured mask vendor, and it's unclear whether any charges have yet been filed in court. Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course. This remains a developing story, and more information is expected in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
