Police in Nairobi have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of terrorism after his suspicious behavior caught the attention of officers near a mosque in the city. The arrest was made by police from Kamukunji Police Station, according to a statement released by the National Police Service (NPS) on Tuesday.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was found acting evasively and behaving in an unusual manner, which led officers to stop and question him. Upon inspecting a bag he was carrying, they reportedly found items that raised security concerns.
“His evasive and erratic behaviour attracted the attention of alert officers from Kamukunji Police Station, prompting them to question him and inspect the contents of a bag in his possession,” the NPS statement read in part.
The police described the man as being of Somali origin and added that the bag he was carrying contained materials suspected to be related to terrorism. However, the statement did not specify the exact nature of the items found inside the bag. The man was arrested near a mosque, though authorities did not name the specific location.
Following the arrest, the suspect was taken into custody and handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) for further questioning and investigation. The ATPU is expected to conduct a thorough probe to determine the suspect’s possible links to any terror networks or planned attacks.
The National Police Service commended the vigilance of the Kamukunji officers, highlighting the importance of public safety and timely action by security personnel. “This incident underscores the importance of alertness and timely intervention in safeguarding our communities,” the NPS said.
The police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. They emphasized that security is a shared responsibility and that cooperation between the public and law enforcement is essential in the fight against terrorism. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and more details will be provided as they become available.
