Tesla Recalls 376,000 Vehicles Over Potential Steering Power Loss

Tesla is recalling more than 376,000 vehicles due to a potential loss of power steering, which could make it harder for drivers to steer and increase the risk of accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a recent report that affected Tesla vehicles have an issue with their electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS). According to Tesla, an "overvoltage breakdown" could overstress motor drive components on the printed circuit board (PCB), causing the power steering to fail. If this happens, the driver will need to use more effort to steer the vehicle, making it harder to control, especially at low speeds.

Tesla stated that when the system is overstressed, the vehicle will display a warning message on the user interface saying, "Steering assist reduced. Steering may require increased effort." If the issue occurs while the vehicle is moving, the message will appear before power steering is lost once the vehicle stops.

So far, Tesla has not reported any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this issue.

The recall applies to certain 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles running software versions earlier than 2023.38.4. To resolve the problem, Tesla has released a free software update.

Tesla plans to send official notification letters to affected vehicle owners on March 25, 2025. Customers who have concerns can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752, using recall number SB-25-00-004. Owners can also reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. The NHTSA has assigned the recall number 25V-092 to this issue.

This is Tesla’s second recall of 2025. In December, the company recalled over 2 million vehicles due to a defective Autopilot system. Additionally, in January, U.S. regulators launched an investigation into 2.6 million Teslas following multiple crashes involving the company’s autonomous driving features. The investigation focuses on Tesla’s technology that allows vehicles to be remotely controlled using a smartphone app.

With Tesla facing increasing scrutiny over its vehicle safety and software updates, the company will likely remain under regulatory watch in the coming months.
