President Donald Trump has dismissed the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General C.Q. Brown, in an unprecedented move that has shaken U.S. military leadership. Along with Brown, five other top military officials, including admirals and generals, have also been removed from their positions.
Trump announced the decision on Truth Social, stating that he would nominate former Lieutenant General Dan "Razin" Caine as Brown’s replacement. This marks a rare move, as Caine would be the first person to be pulled out of retirement to serve as the nation’s top military officer.
Major Changes in Military Leadership
The leadership changes extend beyond Brown’s firing. Trump has also decided to replace Admiral Lisa Franchetti, who was the first woman to lead the U.S. Navy, along with the vice chief of staff of the Air Force. Additionally, he has dismissed the judge advocates general for the Army, Navy, and Air Force—key officials responsible for enforcing military justice.
These changes come as the Pentagon prepares for significant shifts under Trump’s new America First foreign policy, which includes potential budget overhauls and changes to U.S. military deployments. While it is common for civilian leadership at the Pentagon to change with administrations, uniformed military officials traditionally serve regardless of political leadership to maintain military stability.
Brown, who became the second Black officer to serve as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was meant to serve a four-year term ending in 2027. However, he was removed immediately, even before the Senate could confirm his replacement.
Political Fallout and Criticism
The decision to remove Brown and other top officials has sparked criticism, particularly from Democratic lawmakers.
Senator Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, warned that firing military leaders based on political or ideological reasons threatens the professionalism and trust needed within the armed forces.
Representative Seth Moulton called the move “un-American, unpatriotic, and dangerous,” arguing that it politicizes the military in a way that could undermine national security.
A Shift in Trump’s Military Strategy
During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly expressed his intention to remove what he called "woke" generals, particularly those involved in the controversial U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. However, he did not provide a direct reason for Brown’s dismissal.
Trump acknowledged Brown’s service in a brief statement, thanking him for his over 40 years in the military and calling him a “fine gentleman and an outstanding leader.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has been critical of diversity and inclusion initiatives in the military, had previously questioned Brown’s appointment. In his 2024 book The War on Warriors, Hegseth suggested that Brown’s selection may have been influenced by his race rather than his qualifications.
Impact on Women in Military Leadership
The Pentagon shake-up has also affected women in top military positions. Admiral Lisa Franchetti, who led the Navy, is being replaced, marking another high-profile removal of a female military leader.
This follows Trump’s earlier decision to fire Admiral Linda Fagan, the first woman to command the U.S. Coast Guard, on his first day in office.
Retaliation Against Former Military Leaders?
Trump’s administration has also taken actions against retired General Mark Milley, who previously served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later became a vocal critic of Trump. The Pentagon recently revoked Milley’s personal security detail and security clearance while also removing his portrait from Pentagon walls.
Brown, who was traveling on official duty when Trump made the announcement, has not yet commented on his removal. Earlier in the day, his official social media account posted images of him meeting with troops at the U.S.-Mexico border, highlighting the importance of border security.
Trump’s move marks one of the most significant shake-ups in U.S. military leadership in recent history, setting the stage for major changes in the Pentagon’s direction under his administration.
