Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has revoked the appointment of Professor Amukowa Anangwe as the chairperson of the University of Nairobi (UON) Council, a decision made public through a Gazette Notice dated February 21, 2025. However, the Cabinet Secretary did not provide specific reasons for the revocation.
The notice stated that the revocation was made under the authority granted by section 36 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, and section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act. It confirmed that Anangwe’s appointment as chairperson of the UON Council was officially revoked as of February 21, 2025.
This move is expected to pave the way for a new appointment as the university continues to grapple with leadership challenges. The Ministry of Education has been actively involved in restructuring university leadership, aiming to enhance efficiency and governance in the institution.
Leadership changes at the University of Nairobi have been a key issue in recent months. In August 2024, the UON Council, under Anangwe’s leadership, appointed Professor Margaret Hutchinson as the acting Vice-Chancellor. This decision followed the suspension of Professor Stephen Kiama over allegations of gross misconduct.
The revocation of Anangwe’s appointment adds another layer to the leadership shake-up at the university. It remains to be seen who will be appointed as the new chairperson and what impact this will have on the ongoing efforts to improve governance at Kenya’s premier higher learning institution.
