George Foreman, the former heavyweight boxing champion known for his remarkable comeback and later success as a businessman, has died at the age of 76. His family announced his passing on social media but did not disclose the cause or location of his death.
Foreman first won the heavyweight title in his 20s, defeating Joe Frazier in 1973. However, he lost the championship a year later in the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" against Muhammad Ali. Ali's tactical brilliance and use of the "rope-a-dope" strategy led to one of the most famous upsets in boxing history, ending Foreman’s reign.
Following his defeat, Foreman stepped away from boxing in 1977 after experiencing a personal and religious transformation. He spent the next decade as a preacher and working with youth before making an astonishing return to the ring in 1987. Despite being in his late 30s, he defied expectations and fought his way back into the title picture.
In 1994, at the age of 45, Foreman stunned the world by knocking out Michael Moorer to reclaim the heavyweight championship. His victory made him the oldest man ever to win the title, capping off one of the most remarkable comebacks in sports history.
Foreman retired for good in 1997, finishing his career with a record of 76 wins, 5 losses, and 68 knockouts. But his influence extended far beyond boxing. He became a household name with the George Foreman Grill, a product that sold over 100 million units worldwide and brought him immense financial success.
Many in the boxing world have paid tribute to Foreman, remembering him not just for his achievements in the ring but for his warmth and charisma. Jim Lampley, a longtime boxing commentator, described him as a "human genius," both in his ability to reinvent himself and in his business acumen.
Foreman had 12 children, including five sons named George Edward Foreman. His legacy as a champion, businessman, and inspirational figure will endure for generations.
