Harambee Stars’ hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a blow on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to Gabon at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. The defeat, which marked a rare home match for Kenya, was highlighted by a brace from Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Kenya had not played a home game since September 2023 due to issues with CAF-approved stadia, forcing the team to play their 'home' fixtures in neutral venues across Uganda, Malawi, and South Africa. With a packed Nyayo Stadium behind them, the Harambee Stars faced a tough challenge from the start as Gabon pressured early, winning several set pieces.
In the 16th minute, a poor defensive clearance allowed Aubameyang to score from a well-delivered cross by Alex Moucketou-Moussounda, giving Gabon a 1-0 lead. Kenya quickly responded, with Michael Olunga having a goal ruled offside in the 18th minute. Another chance came when Mohamed Bajaber missed a clear opportunity, and five minutes before halftime, Olunga’s powerful shot struck the upright, denying Kenya an equalizer.
Gabon’s dominance continued into the second half. In the 50th minute, Aubameyang converted a penalty after Erick Ouma handled the ball inside the area, making it 2-0. Kenya’s goalkeeper, Ian Otieno, kept them in the game with a crucial save shortly after when he prevented a rebound from Mario Lemina’s powerful shot.
Kenya got their breakthrough in the 61st minute when Michael Olunga scored from a precise cross by Erick Ouma. The goal halved the deficit, and Kenya pushed for an equalizer in the final stages. However, Gabon’s defense, led by Bruno Ecuele and goalkeeper Loyce Marcus Mbaba, held firm, and Kenya couldn’t find another goal.
The match ended 2-1, with Gabon moving to the top of Group F. Despite the defeat, Kenya remains hopeful for future qualifiers as they continue their campaign for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
