World Athletics Introduces DNA Testing to Verify Female Athletes

World Athletics has become the first sport to introduce DNA testing to verify whether elite female athletes are biologically female. The governing body announced that it would use a non-invasive cheek swab or dry blood test to ensure fairness in women’s competitions.

A Step Towards Fairness

Sebastian Coe, the president of World Athletics, called the decision a "really important" step in safeguarding the integrity of women’s sports. He emphasized that this move reinforces the organization's commitment to protecting female athletes.

"It is important to do this because it reinforces everything we have been discussing, particularly in recent times—not just talking about the integrity of women's sport, but actually guaranteeing it," Coe said during a press conference following the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China.

Implementation and Athlete Feedback

The new test will be a one-time requirement for athletes competing in the female category. Coe reassured that the procedure is not intrusive and follows extensive consultation with stakeholders in the sport.

"Overwhelmingly, the feedback has indicated that this is absolutely the right approach," he noted, adding that the test will provide confidence in the fairness of women’s competitions.

World Athletics plans to implement the policy before the upcoming outdoor World Championships in September.

Connection to Recent IOC Election

The announcement comes just days after Coe finished third in the race for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which was won by former Zimbabwean Olympic swimmer Kirsty Coventry.

Coventry has previously spoken about the importance of protecting women’s sports and suggested setting up a task force to address the issue further. Some have speculated that Coe’s remarks were a response to her views. However, he dismissed this, insisting that World Athletics is focused on action.

"We are not just talking about it. We are doing it," Coe stated.

The introduction of genetic testing marks a significant shift in how gender verification is handled in sports. While supporters believe it ensures fair competition, the decision is likely to spark debate over its ethical and scientific implications.
