Three family members tragically died after being struck by an Amtrak train near Philadelphia on Thursday evening. According to Bristol Borough Police Chief Joe Moors, the incident occurred when the train, traveling from Boston to Richmond, Virginia, struck the three adults on the tracks around 6:10 p.m.
Police were alerted to the situation when reports came in about people on the tracks. Officers arrived at the scene at about 6:00 p.m., but just moments later, the train hit the victims. It is believed that the three individuals heard the train approaching but were unable to get off the tracks in time. They were struck simultaneously.
The three victims, who were all adults, have not yet been publicly identified by authorities. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the 236 passengers or crew members aboard the train.
Amtrak has since confirmed that it is working closely with the Bristol Borough Police Department as well as Amtrak Police to investigate the incident.
In response to the crash, Amtrak issued a travel advisory noting that all rail traffic departing from New York and Philadelphia was temporarily halted. The company apologized for the inconvenience, asking for passengers' patience. By 11 p.m. Thursday, train service resumed.
This incident follows another tragic event earlier in the week, when a person was killed by an Amtrak train in the same county. That crash occurred near Cornwells Heights Station and caused a one-hour delay in train service. There were no reported injuries to the 232 passengers and crew members on board the train at that time.
Amtrak has expressed its condolences and is cooperating with local authorities to determine the cause of the two incidents.
