Kingi Declares Orwoba’s Senate Seat Vacant After UDA Expulsion

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially declared Senator Gloria Orwoba’s seat vacant following her expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. The declaration was made through a special gazette notice dated May 21, 2025, confirming that Orwoba ceased to hold office with immediate effect.

The notice cited Article 101 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, which provides for the vacancy of a Senate seat under such circumstances. Orwoba was nominated to the Senate under Article 98 (1) (b), representing the ruling UDA party before her removal.

This move followed a failed attempt by Orwoba to challenge her expulsion in court. On May 20, 2025, High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi dismissed her petition, terming it incompetent. Orwoba had turned to the courts after UDA expelled her over allegations of disloyalty, particularly after she was seen publicly associating with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

On April 18, 2025, Orwoba was pictured warmly welcoming Matiang’i, a move that seemed to trigger her fallout with the party. By May 19, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar issued a press statement confirming her expulsion. He stated that the party’s Disciplinary Committee had thoroughly reviewed the matter and resolved to expel her with immediate effect. The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) later ratified the decision.

Following the expulsion, UDA formally wrote to Speaker Kingi requesting the initiation of her removal from the Senate. They also notified the Registrar of Political Parties and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). UDA has nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi from Kimilili constituency, Bungoma County, to replace Orwoba.

Responding to the events, Orwoba posted on Facebook on May 21, asserting that she did not enter politics for financial gain. She criticized unnamed leaders for conning Kenyans with fake job promises, claiming those were the ones in politics for money. She said her goal has always been to make a positive impact.

Orwoba, who now plans to run for the Bobasi parliamentary seat in 2027, urged her followers to stay calm and avoid misinformation. She promised to keep them updated on her political journey and hinted that her troubles were far from over, signaling she’s preparing for a comeback.
