Three Killed, Dozens Injured in Algeria Stadium Stand Collapse

Three people were killed and more than 70 others injured after falling from the upper stands of a stadium in Algeria following MC Alger’s celebration of their second consecutive top-flight league title. The incident occurred shortly after the team’s victory, turning a moment of triumph into tragedy.

According to a statement by the Algerian Ministry of Health shared on Facebook, multiple hospitals received injured fans. Beni Messous University Hospital admitted 38 injured individuals, while Ben Aknoun Hospital received 27, and Bab El Oued Hospital treated 16. In total, over 70 people were hurt in the fall.

Among the victims was Younes Amguzzi, a supporter whose death was acknowledged in a post by the club on Instagram. “It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands,” read MC Alger’s message.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his condolences to the families of those who died and sent wishes for a quick recovery to the injured. His message added a national tone of mourning to what should have been a time of celebration.

The full details surrounding the cause of the fall have not yet been made public, but the incident highlights serious concerns over stadium safety and crowd control during major sporting events in the country. Fans had gathered in large numbers to celebrate MC Alger’s league success, but the joy was overshadowed by the deadly incident.

MC Alger’s win marked their second straight Algerian Ligue 1 title, a significant achievement for one of the country’s most popular football clubs. However, the celebrations were abruptly cut short by the tragic accident that followed.

Authorities have not yet announced whether an investigation will be launched into the safety conditions at the stadium. Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for the victims, as the Algerian football community comes to terms with the devastating loss.

What began as a night of celebration quickly turned somber, leaving a lasting impact on the club’s fans and the nation.
