Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has spoken out about the tragic death of his teammate Diogo Jota and Jota’s brother, André, saying the loss has left him shaken and fearful of returning to the club after the international break.
Salah shared his grief in an emotional Instagram post on Friday, expressing how difficult it is to accept the sudden death of someone he played alongside regularly.
“Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Teammates come and go but not like this,” he wrote. “It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.”
The Egyptian forward also sent a heartfelt message to Jota’s family, acknowledging the deep pain they must be going through after losing both Diogo and André so suddenly.
“My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children,” Salah added. “Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.”
Diogo Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, had become a vital part of the team’s attacking line-up. Under former manager Jürgen Klopp and more recently Arne Slot, Jota stood out for his ability to play across the front line, his sharp finishing, and his consistency in big matches.
In his four years at the club, the Portuguese international played a major role in Liverpool’s domestic and European competitions. His goal-scoring ability and commitment made him a fan favorite and a key figure in the dressing room.
The loss of both Jota and his brother has shocked not only the Liverpool camp but also the wider football community. Supporters, teammates, and clubs around the world have been sending tributes and messages of support to the family.
As Liverpool prepares to resume training and matches, Salah’s words reflect the emotional toll this tragedy has taken on the team. The sense of loss will likely be felt strongly when players regroup, with Jota’s absence leaving a deep void both on and off the pitch.
