Awentami Paul Afoko has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, whose passing on August 11, 2025, has plunged Ghana into mourning. Her death comes at a time when the Ashanti Kingdom is already reeling from the loss of two prominent chiefs and a linguist in recent months.
For the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the loss is especially profound. Nana Konadu Yiadom III was not only the Queen Mother of the Ashanti Kingdom but also his only surviving sister and traditional mother, making her death a deeply personal blow.
In his statement, Afoko reflected on the respect and bond he shared with the Ashanti royal family. He recalled the great honour earlier this year when the Asantehene sent a high-level delegation to represent him at the funeral of Afoko’s late father in Sandema, Upper East Region. This gesture, Afoko said, demonstrated the Otumfuo’s generosity, leadership, and the deep cultural ties that bind Ghanaians across regions.
Afoko joined many others — including politicians, business leaders, clergy, traditional rulers, imams, and citizens from all walks of life — in acknowledging the invaluable role the Asantehene plays in Ghana’s cultural and national life. He described the recent series of bereavements as a moment of shared grief for the entire nation.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III’s passing marks the end of an era in Ashanti history. As Asantehemaa, she was a central figure in preserving traditions, guiding the royal court, and offering counsel to the Asantehene. Her influence extended far beyond the palace, shaping social and cultural values in the Ashanti Kingdom for years.
Concluding his tribute, Afoko offered his condolences in Twi, saying: “Nana Otumfuo, me ma wo due, due ne amanehunu. Due Damirifa Due.” The words, deeply rooted in Ashanti mourning tradition, express both sorrow and respect for the departed.
The funeral arrangements for Nana Konadu Yiadom III are yet to be formally announced, but the nation is expected to come together to honour her life, legacy, and service to the Ashanti Kingdom.
