A member of the production team for the Netflix hit series Emily in Paris has died suddenly while filming in Venice for the show’s fifth season. The incident has cast a shadow over the popular romantic comedy series, which has been filming scenes in Italy.
Italian newspaper La Repubblica identified the deceased as 47-year-old Diego Borella, who worked as an assistant director on the series. According to reports, medical teams were called to the Hotel Danieli, a luxury hotel in Venice, at around 19:00 local time (18:00 BST) on Thursday. Despite their efforts, they were unable to save him.
Paramount Television Studios, which produces Emily in Paris for Netflix, released a statement expressing grief over Borella’s passing. “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family,” a spokesperson said. The studio extended its condolences to Borella’s family, friends, and colleagues, describing his death as a tragic loss to the team.
Borella’s death comes as Emily in Paris continues filming its highly anticipated fifth season. The series, created by Darren Star, follows the life of Emily Cooper, an American marketing executive played by Lily Collins, who navigates work and romance after moving to Paris. Since its debut in 2020, the show has become one of Netflix’s most-watched titles worldwide, with a loyal fan base eagerly awaiting new episodes.
The production in Venice was part of the ongoing international filming schedule, with cast and crew recently spotted shooting scenes in iconic Italian locations. News of Borella’s sudden death has raised concern among fans and colleagues alike, with tributes expected from members of the cast and crew in the coming days.
While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, Italian media reports suggest that Borella’s passing was unexpected, adding to the shock among those working on set. Authorities in Venice have not provided further details at this time.
As the team mourns the loss of a colleague, filming on Emily in Paris is expected to continue, though with a heavy sense of loss. Borella is remembered as an experienced professional whose contribution to the series was invaluable.
