UDA Schedules September 20 Nominations Ahead of By-Elections

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will conduct its party nominations for upcoming by-elections on September 20, 2025, covering vacant positions in the National Assembly, Senate, and various County Assembly wards.

In a notice issued Thursday, the party’s National Elections Board said the nomination process will begin with registration of aspirants from August 14 to September 5, 2025, closing at 5:00 pm. All interested candidates must apply via the party’s official online portal, www.uda.ke.

Nomination fees will vary based on the position and category of the aspirant. For the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat, male aspirants will pay Sh50,000, while women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay Sh25,000. For the Member of National Assembly and Senate seats, male aspirants will be charged Sh250,000, while women, youth, and PWDs will pay Sh125,000.

The announcement follows confirmation by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) that all by-elections will be held on November 27, 2025. The IEBC has already gazetted 16 ward by-elections as of August 8, 2025, and appointed Returning and Deputy Returning Officers. The affected wards include Angata Nanyokie (Samburu), Chemundu/Kapng’etuny (Nandi), Chewani (Tana River), Fafi (Garissa), Kariobangi North (Nairobi), Kisa East (Kakamega), Metkei (Elgeyo Marakwet), Mumbuni North (Machakos), Narok Town (Narok), Purko (Kajiado), Tembelio (Uasin Gishu), Nyansiongo, Nyamaiya, and Ekerenyo (Nyamira), as well as Lake Zone and Nanaam (Turkana).

A second gazette notice, set for release on August 11, 2025, will list more by-elections, including the Baringo County Senate seat, National Assembly seats for Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja constituencies, and the MCA seat for Kabuchai/Chwele Ward in Bungoma County.

The IEBC has instructed all political parties participating in the by-elections to submit the names and specimen signatures of authorised party officials, along with their list of contestants, by September 17, 2025. Independent candidates are also required to submit their names and chosen symbols by the same date.

This timeline means political parties and candidates have just over a month to finalise preparations before the campaigns formally begin for the November polls.
