Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has ended his United States tour ahead of schedule to return home and lead his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) in preparations for crucial by-elections.
In a statement released Thursday, Gachagua announced the abrupt conclusion of his multi-state trip, which began in early July and was aimed at engaging the Kenyan diaspora, rallying political support, and launching international party chapters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“I had a very successful and fulfilling visit to the United States with serious engagements with Kenyans in the diaspora,” Gachagua said. “I regret being unable to visit the remaining scheduled states since I need to return home to join our party in preparation for the upcoming by-elections.”
The decision marks a shift from international outreach to domestic political focus, with Gachagua viewing the mini-polls as a key test of his party’s strength. His tour, accompanied by his wife Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, had included stops in cities like Boston and Seattle, drawing enthusiastic crowds. He apologised to Kenyans in states he was yet to visit, promising to reschedule the cancelled events for early next year.
Before heading home, Gachagua plans to take a short break, adding that his return itinerary will be made public. He expressed gratitude to the Kenyan community in the US for their “love, warmth, and hospitality,” and praised DCP officials for their organisation and coordination.
The upcoming by-elections are shaping up as a political litmus test, both for Gachagua’s fledgling party and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The contests will be the first major electoral battle since the dramatic fallout between the president and his former deputy.
For Gachagua, strong results could strengthen his claim as a viable 2027 presidential contender, boosting his influence in Mt. Kenya and beyond. Poor results, however, could weaken his momentum and raise doubts about the DCP’s viability.
For President Ruto, the by-elections present an opportunity to reinforce UDA’s dominance and counter any perception of waning political strength. A decisive win for UDA would be a blow to Gachagua’s ambitions, potentially limiting his influence to regional politics.
Beyond the rivalry, the mini-polls will provide an early reading of Kenya’s political mood ahead of the next general election.
