Wetang’ula Urges Rift Valley to Support Ruto for Second Term

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Rift Valley residents to rally behind President William Ruto for a second term in office, saying every president in Kenya has historically served two terms.

Speaking during a political gathering, Wetang’ula stressed that President Ruto deserved full support to complete his 10-year cycle, arguing that his leadership record and ongoing economic reforms would justify his re-election.

“So let us be fair, and every president in Kenya has had his two terms,” Wetang’ula said. “We are asking because of the track record that he will be able to post and will merit the second term on account of the track record that he will have delivered on Kenyans and in transforming the economy of Kenya.”

Wetang’ula, who doubles as the Ford Kenya party leader, pointed out that previous heads of state — from Jomo Kenyatta to Uhuru Kenyatta — had all served two terms, and Ruto should be no exception if he continues to perform well. He said the President’s development agenda, especially in the economy and infrastructure, needed continuity to ensure Kenyans reap long-term benefits.

His remarks are part of growing political messaging among Ruto allies, who are increasingly rallying support for the President ahead of the 2027 General Election. Wetang’ula’s appeal to Rift Valley, Ruto’s stronghold, was seen as both a reassurance to the region and a signal to other parts of the country about the Speaker’s alignment with the President’s re-election bid.

The Speaker emphasized that Ruto’s economic transformation agenda, including efforts to ease the cost of living and improve livelihoods, required more time to take shape. He argued that cutting short the reforms by denying the President a second term would slow progress already underway.

Wetang’ula also reminded Kenyans that political stability and consistency in leadership are crucial for economic growth. By granting Ruto a second term, he said, Kenya would maintain momentum in national development projects and attract more investor confidence.

His call comes as political debate intensifies across the country, with allies and opponents of the President positioning themselves ahead of the next polls.
