King Charles Appears in Public After Hospital Stay for Cancer

King Charles III waved and smiled at well-wishers in London on Friday, a day after being hospitalized for side effects from his cancer treatment. The 76-year-old monarch had his appointments canceled on Thursday following a “short period of observation” in the hospital, according to Buckingham Palace.

The king’s health has been a major concern since he revealed his cancer diagnosis early last year. His condition has not been publicly disclosed, but he has continued to fulfill state duties while stepping back from public engagements.

On Friday, Charles was seen leaving Clarence House in the back of a black Audi. Tourists gathered outside expressed relief at seeing him in good spirits. Julian Mati, a visitor, said, “We were shocked when we heard the news yesterday. We never expected to see the king today, but it was a relief to see him smiling and waving.”

Since taking the throne in September 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles has worked to maintain the monarchy’s relevance. His role, though largely ceremonial, requires significant time and energy, including meetings with political leaders, state events, and ceremonies honoring British citizens. In his first year as king, Charles attended 161 official engagements.

His illness has added pressure to the royal family, particularly as his daughter-in-law, Kate, the Princess of Wales, also battles cancer. Kate, who is married to Prince William, took more than six months away from public duties before resuming them in late September.

As Charles continues his treatment, royal watchers will be closely following his health and its impact on the monarchy.
