A tragic road accident in Lagos claimed the life of a Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) official and left a commercial minibus driver severely injured. The accident happened late Monday night at Ketu bus stop when a yellow minibus crashed into a stationary truck.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the crash occurred at about 11:59 p.m. Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes after receiving distress calls.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday. He said the accident involved a registered commercial minibus, commonly called "korope," with plate number AGL 97 YK. The vehicle collided with a parked LAWMA truck, whose registration details were not immediately available.
Preliminary investigations pointed to reckless driving by the minibus driver and the failure of the parked LAWMA truck to display a C-Caution sign, which would have warned oncoming vehicles.
“In the process of the accident, the minibus struck a LAWMA official who was carrying out his duties. Sadly, he was confirmed dead before emergency teams arrived,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
The injured minibus driver received first aid from paramedics at the scene before being taken for further medical treatment. Meanwhile, LASEMA towed both vehicles to restore traffic flow in the area. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially at night, to prevent similar accidents.
