A United Nations aircraft made a safe emergency landing at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu after experiencing a landing gear malfunction. The incident occurred during a routine flight from Mogadishu to Baidoa, forcing the crew to return to the capital.
The aircraft, operated by the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), encountered the issue mid-flight when the pilots detected a problem preventing the landing wheels from deploying correctly. Acting quickly, the crew decided to return to Mogadishu, where they executed a controlled emergency landing.
Emergency response teams at the airport were on standby to assist, ensuring the aircraft landed safely. While most passengers and crew were unharmed, one passenger sustained a minor injury during the evacuation process.
Following the incident, the United Nations in Somalia praised the professionalism of the flight crew and emergency responders. "We commend the collaboration between UNSOS and the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority, which made this effective response possible," said Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, the Head of UNSOS and an Assistant Secretary-General at the UN.
The emergency landing highlights the importance of quick decision-making by pilots and coordination between aviation authorities. Thanks to the crew’s swift response and airport preparedness, a potentially dangerous situation was managed without serious harm.
As investigations into the cause of the landing gear malfunction continue, UNSOS and the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority will likely review procedures to prevent similar issues in the future. Despite the scare, the successful emergency landing demonstrates the effectiveness of safety measures in place for UN-operated flights in the region.
