Billboard has named Nicki Minaj the greatest female rapper of all time, placing her at the top of its newly released list of the 25 greatest female rappers in hip hop history.
The list, compiled by Billboard’s editorial staff, celebrates four decades of American hip hop by highlighting the achievements of the most influential female MCs. Topping the rankings is Nicki Minaj, who has dominated the rap scene for nearly two decades with her dynamic style, bold persona, and unmatched commercial success.
According to Billboard, Minaj became the first female rapper to reach over 100 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2018. As of publication, she has 149 entries—more than any other female rapper. Her ability to reinvent herself through different rap personas, along with her string of hit singles, guest verses, and unforgettable performances, helped secure her the number one spot.
Missy Elliott came in second on the list, followed by Lauryn Hill at number three. Hill’s placement stirred some debate among fans, many of whom believe her critically acclaimed album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1999, deserved to place her higher.
Cardi B landed just outside the top 10 at number 11. Her debut album Invasion of Privacy was praised by Billboard as one of the most iconic rap albums of all time. Meanwhile, rising stars like Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, and GloRilla also made the cut, recognized for their influence over the past decade.
Grammy winner Doechii, who broke into the mainstream just a year ago, surprised many by earning the 24th spot on the list—an acknowledgment of her growing impact in the industry.
The list sparked a mix of praise and discussion among fans, but one thing is clear: Nicki Minaj's legacy as a trailblazer in hip hop continues to shine, firmly cementing her status as The Queen of rap.
