English actor and comedian Russell Brand has been formally charged with rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault in connection with incidents alleged to have occurred between 1999 and 2005.
The charges come after an investigation by the Metropolitan Police, which began in September 2023 following multiple complaints. The police have urged any other individuals who may have been impacted to come forward and speak with authorities.
“The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers,” said Andy Furphy, Detective Superintendent at the Metropolitan Police. The investigation remains open, and police have encouraged anyone with information to reach out.
Brand is accused of five offenses: one charge of rape, one of oral rape, one of indecent assault, and two of sexual assault. These allegations involve four separate women. One of the accused incidents reportedly took place in Westminster, London, in 2001, where Brand allegedly sexually assaulted a woman. He is also accused of raping another woman in Bournemouth in 1999. Further charges include the sexual assault of a woman in Westminster between 2004 and 2005 and the commission of oral rape and sexual assault against another woman in 2004.
“We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023,” said prosecutor Jaswant Narwal. “We concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offenses including rape and sexual assault.”
The Crown Prosecution Service has stressed that criminal proceedings are ongoing and that Brand has the right to a fair trial. They also urged the public to avoid any reporting that could prejudice the case.
Russell Brand, who denies the allegations, addressed the charges in a video posted to his social media page. He stated, “What I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity.”
Brand is scheduled to appear in court on May 2 to face the charges.
