Veteran Bollywood actor and director Manoj Kumar, known for his patriotic films, has died at the age of 87.
Kumar passed away on April 4, 2025, in Mumbai due to age-related health issues. He had been undergoing treatment at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where doctors confirmed his health had been gradually worsening. Dr. Santosh Shetty, one of the attending doctors, said the actor had been unwell for some time.
His son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed the news and told ANI, “My father had been battling health issues for a long time. It was by the grace of God that he left this world peacefully.” The family has announced that his cremation will take place on April 5.
Often referred to as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his deeply patriotic roles, Manoj Kumar became a household name in Indian cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. He was admired for creating stories that reflected the lives of Indian farmers, freedom fighters, and everyday citizens. His popular films include Shaheed, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Kranti, Purab Aur Paschim, and Gumnaam. These movies struck a chord with audiences still processing the legacy of British colonial rule.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Kumar on social media, calling him an “icon of Indian cinema.” Modi added, “Manoj Ji’s works ignite national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”
Actors from the current generation also acknowledged his influence. Akshay Kumar said he grew up watching Manoj Kumar’s films, which taught him about love for the nation. Ajay Devgn also expressed his admiration, saying Kumar created powerful moments that are now part of Indian cinema’s golden history.
Born Harikrishan Goswami in Punjab in 1937, Kumar’s family moved to Delhi after the Partition. He studied at Hindu College under Delhi University before beginning his film career in the late 1950s. His directorial debut, Upkar (1967), introduced the iconic slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail Soldier, Hail Farmer), a phrase that still resonates in India today.
Over his long career, Kumar was honored with numerous awards. These include the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015 for his contributions to Indian cinema. As fans and filmmakers mourn his loss, Manoj Kumar is remembered as a true cinematic legend whose films will continue to inspire generations to come.
