British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been officially charged with rape and multiple sexual offences involving four women.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the charges in a statement released on Monday, following a lengthy investigation that began after a joint exposé by the Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches aired in September 2023. Brand, 49, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, insisting that all of his past relationships were “always consensual.”
According to the police, the charges relate to incidents that allegedly took place between 1999 and 2005. Brand is now facing one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two additional counts of sexual assault.
The detailed breakdown of the allegations is as follows:
In 1999, a woman was allegedly raped in the Bournemouth area.
In 2001, another woman was reportedly indecently assaulted in Westminster, London.
In 2004, a third woman alleged she was orally raped and sexually assaulted, also in Westminster.
Between 2004 and 2005, a fourth woman claims she was sexually assaulted, again in the Westminster area.
The police have written to Brand to notify him of the charges and directed him to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2, 2025.
However, Brand is currently believed to be in the United States. In such cases, UK prosecutors usually seek cooperation from the suspect for a voluntary return. If the individual does not comply, authorities may initiate extradition proceedings.
The investigation stems from numerous reports that emerged in 2023, detailing serious allegations of misconduct against the entertainer during his time as a rising star in British media.
Brand has not made a new public statement since the formal charges were announced, but he previously described the allegations as “very, very hurtful” and denied all accusations.
The case is expected to draw significant public attention as it proceeds through the UK court system in the coming months.
