Inter Milan secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night, gaining a valuable away win in Germany.
The match started with Bayern Munich putting pressure on the visitors, but it was Inter who struck first. Lautaro Martínez gave Inter the lead in the 38th minute after a precise assist from Marcus Thuram, and they held onto the advantage as the teams went into halftime.
Bayern responded strongly in the second half and equalised in the 85th minute. Thomas Müller, the experienced Bayern forward, found the back of the net after being set up by Konrad Laimer, sparking celebrations in the Allianz Arena. The score was level at 1-1, but the drama wasn’t over.
Just three minutes later, Inter regained the lead. Davide Frattesi scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, finishing from a Carlos Augusto assist to silence the Bayern fans. This proved to be the winning goal, and despite some late yellow cards for Inter players, including Frattesi, Lautaro Martínez, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the match ended 2-1 in their favour.
Bayern also saw a booking for Kim Min-jae in the 29th minute, but the result left them with much to do in the second leg. Inter now hold the advantage, with Bayern facing an uphill task to overturn the deficit and progress to the semi-finals.
The victory puts Inter Milan in a strong position ahead of the return leg at home, while Bayern will need to rally to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
