Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been hospitalised and will not be on the sidelines for Sunday’s key match against Manchester United. The 47-year-old was taken to hospital on Friday evening after feeling unwell for several days.
In an official statement released by the club, Newcastle confirmed that Howe is conscious and in communication with his family while undergoing further medical tests. “The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening, having felt unwell for several days,” the club said. “Medical staff kept Eddie in the hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family and is continuing to receive expert medical care.”
Newcastle also shared their support for Howe, stating, “Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery.”
With Howe unavailable, assistant manager Jason Tindall and first-team coach Graeme Jones will take charge of the team for Sunday’s high-pressure Premier League fixture against Manchester United. The match is critical for Newcastle’s ambitions to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Newcastle currently sit seventh in the league table. However, with two games in hand, they still have a chance to climb as high as third. Due to England’s strong performances in European competitions, even a fifth-place finish could be enough to secure a Champions League spot next season.
Since taking over as head coach in November 2021, Eddie Howe has led Newcastle through a period of impressive growth. In his first two full seasons, the club finished 11th and 4th in the Premier League, and they are now positioned seventh in the ongoing campaign. Across 165 matches in all competitions, Howe has recorded 84 wins, 36 draws, and 45 losses.
One of the standout moments of Howe’s time at Newcastle came when they defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage of the 2023–24 UEFA Champions League. Although they did not advance past the group stage, the performance highlighted Howe’s influence on the team’s development.
Howe’s coaching career began at Bournemouth, where he had two successful periods as manager, separated by a short spell at Burnley. Known for his tactical skills and leadership, Howe has frequently been seen as a possible candidate for the England national team job. However, he later confirmed he was not interviewed before Thomas Tuchel was appointed to the role in October.
