Newcastle United moved into the Premier League’s top four on Sunday after a dominant 4-1 win over Manchester United, boosting their chances of securing Champions League football next season.
Following their Carabao Cup triumph last month, which ended a 70-year wait for silverware, Newcastle have shifted their focus to finishing in the top four. With Chelsea drawing 2-2 against Ipswich earlier in the day, Newcastle had a clear opportunity to jump into fourth place—and they took it in style.
Despite missing manager Eddie Howe due to illness, Newcastle looked confident from the start. In the 24th minute, Alexander Isak set up Sandro Tonali, who fired home a powerful volley past Manchester United’s goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, making his Premier League debut after Andre Onana was dropped.
Bayindir kept United in the game early on, denying Isak a goal and watching as Dan Burn’s header landed on top of the net. Manchester United, who have now suffered 14 league defeats this season, briefly responded. A quick counter-attack saw Alejandro Garnacho finish cleanly to level the match before halftime.
But Newcastle came out firing in the second half. Harvey Barnes tapped in Jacob Murphy’s low cross just minutes after the break to restore the lead. Barnes then capitalized on a slip from Noussair Mazraoui, storming through United’s defense and striking into the top corner for his second goal of the match.
With Manchester United rattled, Newcastle continued to press. A poor pass from Bayindir gifted the ball to Bruno Guimaraes, who slotted in the fourth goal. That sealed a historic moment for Newcastle, who completed their first league double over Manchester United in 94 years.
The win marked Newcastle’s fourth consecutive Premier League victory and pushed them firmly into the Champions League race.
