The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an investigation into allegations of police brutality after disturbing images of an injured woman in Narok surfaced on social media.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 21, 2025, IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan confirmed that the authority had contacted the victim’s family and had already begun an independent investigation. The probe aims to uncover the full facts surrounding the alleged assault, which reportedly took place at Naroosura Police Station in Narok South.
“An independent investigation is underway to establish the facts surrounding this incident,” IPOA announced, stressing that the inquiry would be thorough and unbiased.
The authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining impartiality throughout the investigation process. IPOA assured the public that if any evidence of police misconduct is found, those responsible will be held fully accountable under the law.
The case has drawn widespread attention online, with many Kenyans calling for swift justice for the woman seen injured in the widely shared images. The graphic nature of the photos has sparked outrage and renewed conversations about police conduct and accountability in Kenya.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred within the premises of the Naroosura Police Station. However, the exact circumstances leading to the woman’s injuries have yet to be fully established, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
IPOA’s swift response signals a proactive approach to addressing allegations of police abuse, particularly at a time when public trust in law enforcement remains fragile. The authority emphasized that it would keep the public informed as the investigation progresses, highlighting the importance of transparency in handling such sensitive matters.
The Narok case adds to a growing list of incidents that have put Kenyan police under scrutiny for their handling of civilians. IPOA’s mandate is to independently monitor and investigate police actions to ensure professionalism, protect human rights, and foster accountability within the National Police Service.
As the investigation continues, IPOA has urged members of the public with any information or evidence related to the incident to come forward and assist in the probe.
