Air Peace Halts Flights Nationwide Amid NiMet Workers’ Strike

Air Peace has announced the suspension of all flight operations across Nigeria due to the ongoing strike by employees of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The airline said the decision was necessary because crucial weather reports needed for safe landings are currently unavailable.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Air Peace explained, “Due to the ongoing NiMet strike and the unavailability of QNH (hazardous weather) reports required for safe landings, Air Peace has suspended all flight operations nationwide until the strike is over.” The airline emphasized that passenger safety remains its highest priority and promised to provide updates as the situation develops.

Earlier, Air Peace had warned passengers that the NiMet strike could cause significant flight delays and cancellations across its network. The airline also stated it is closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant authorities to reduce the impact on travelers' plans as much as possible.

The strike, which began today, was launched by NiMet workers over a series of welfare and financial disputes with management. Workers are protesting the agency’s alleged refusal to negotiate or implement agreed financial allowances, including wage awards and peculiar allowances. They are also demanding the payment of outstanding entitlements linked to the 2019 minimum wage adjustments.

In addition to the financial issues, the striking employees accused NiMet’s management of withholding critical documents, ignoring calls to include omitted staff in previous payments, and prioritizing executive retreats over essential staff training programs. These grievances have fueled growing tensions within the agency, ultimately leading to the indefinite nationwide strike.

The strike’s impact on the aviation sector has been immediate and severe, as accurate and timely weather information provided by NiMet is critical for flight safety. Without access to necessary reports like the QNH — which indicates atmospheric pressure at sea level and is essential for safe landings — airlines are unable to operate safely.

Air Peace’s decision highlights how deeply the NiMet strike is affecting air travel in Nigeria. As passengers await further updates, the airline has urged for patience and understanding, reaffirming its commitment to customer safety above all else.
