President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on Ugandans, especially youth and skilled workers in urban areas, to embrace wealth creation through active participation in the economy. Speaking during a visit to Bakitende Expert Garage in Wakaliga-Nateete, Rubaga Division, the President emphasized that every Ugandan should be involved as a business owner, worker, or trainee to help drive national development.
The visit was part of a five-day assessment tour of the Parish Development Model (PDM) in Kampala. Accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, the President said poverty was a personal challenge that can only be addressed through productivity. He urged citizens not to remain idle or dependent, but to take advantage of government support to build sustainable livelihoods.
“Wealth creation is the foundation of transformation. Be a farmer, artisan, industrialist, or service provider. What matters is that you are engaged,” said Museveni.
He highlighted sectors like commercial farming, carpentry, shoemaking, tailoring, welding, and mechanical services as key avenues for income generation, even for those with limited land or capital. “On a small piece of land, with planning and calculation—what we call ekibaro—you can succeed,” he added.
Museveni praised garages and other service providers for supporting production and announced plans to provide them with machines such as welding equipment, tyre inflators, and breakdown trucks. Each garage will receive tools suited to its needs, and some equipment may be shared at the parish or sub-county level. He also pledged Shs20 million per sub-county for food suppliers and spare parts dealers, on the condition that they form groups or cooperatives.
The President criticized opposition leaders in Kampala for failing to advocate for essential services. He gave the example of Busega Market, where traders raised concerns about a poor access road, yet local leaders had not informed him. “Elect leaders who talk to me so we can fix problems,” he urged.
Garage chairman Muhamood Sonko thanked the President for his visit, explaining that their group formed after an eviction in Kisenyi and now trains over 65 youth, many of whom become full members. He appealed for more tools to reduce waiting times and expand training.
The President promised closer monitoring of government support this time, saying that past aid had failed due to poor follow-up. “This time, my State House team will ensure implementation,” Museveni assured.
Also present were government officials and NRM leaders who praised Museveni’s leadership and pledged support for the PDM rollout in Kampala.
