Officer Denies Role in Rex Masai Killing Despite Photos

Police Constable Isaiah Murangiri has denied involvement in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old protester Rex Masai, despite photographic evidence being presented in court.

Masai was killed during anti-government demonstrations in June last year, sparking widespread public outrage and calls for justice. On Wednesday, the case took a significant turn when Murangiri, identified by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) as a key suspect, rejected claims that he was the officer captured in photos taken during the protest.

IPOA insists that Murangiri is the person shown in the images, which are believed to have been taken at the scene where Masai was shot. The authority says the photographs clearly show the officer’s presence during the protest, linking him to the deadly incident.

The denial came during court proceedings where the evidence was formally presented. Murangiri maintained that he was not involved in the incident and challenged the accuracy of the visual evidence. He also questioned the reliability of the photographic identification, arguing that it was not enough to place him at the scene of the crime.

The killing of Rex Masai occurred during nationwide protests over the high cost of living and other grievances against the government. His death drew sharp criticism from civil rights groups, who accused the police of using excessive force on peaceful demonstrators.

In response to the public outcry, IPOA launched an investigation into the incident. Their findings led to the identification and arrest of Murangiri, whom they allege was directly involved in the shooting. The authority says it relied on multiple sources, including eyewitness accounts and visual documentation, to build its case.

Masai’s family has continued to demand justice, saying they want those responsible held accountable. Human rights organizations have also expressed concern about the slow pace of police accountability and have urged the government to ensure transparency in the case.

The court will continue hearing the matter, with more witnesses expected to testify. The outcome of this high-profile case could set an important precedent for how police conduct during public protests is handled in Kenya moving forward.
