Two young children died in a mysterious house fire in Nyeri County, while their older sister narrowly escaped the flames.
The tragic incident happened when the three siblings were inside the house. The eldest, a Grade 9 girl, managed to flee the burning home and alert neighbours, but help came too late for her younger siblings. Despite the community's quick response, the fire had already taken hold, and the two children could not be saved.
Authorities say the cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to determine how it started. Police and fire department officials visited the scene and have launched a probe to establish whether the fire was accidental or deliberately started.
The children’s identities and exact ages have not been officially released, but they were reported to be from the same family. The local community is in shock, mourning the unexpected deaths of the young victims. Residents described the children as friendly and well-liked, and the family as peaceful and hardworking.
Eyewitnesses said they saw thick smoke coming from the house and rushed over to try and help. Some broke windows and tried to force their way in, but the flames had already spread quickly throughout the home.
“We tried everything we could, but the fire was too intense,” said one of the neighbours. “It’s heartbreaking to know the children were inside.”
The surviving sister, though physically unharmed, is reportedly traumatised. Local authorities have offered counselling support to help her deal with the loss of her siblings and the frightening experience.
Nyeri County officials have also called for improved fire safety awareness and better emergency response mechanisms to prevent such tragedies in the future. They encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity that could help investigators piece together what happened.
The family has received an outpouring of support from neighbours and local leaders, with plans underway to assist them in funeral preparations and provide continued emotional support during this difficult time
