Kenya Seeks Chinese Contractors for Kiambu Road Expansion

Kenya has officially invited Chinese construction firms to bid for the expansion of Kiambu Road, a major project aimed at easing traffic and improving infrastructure in Nairobi’s metropolitan area.

In a public notice, the government outlined strict prequalification requirements for interested companies. To be considered, applicants must show they have consistently managed large-scale construction projects over the past five years. Specifically, they need to prove an average annual construction turnover of at least USD 250 million. This figure is based on the total certified payments received for both ongoing and completed contracts, averaged over a five-year period.

The expansion of Kiambu Road is part of Kenya’s broader plan to modernise its transport network and reduce congestion in and around Nairobi. The road is a key corridor connecting the city to the rapidly growing Kiambu County. As traffic volumes continue to rise, the government sees upgrading the road as essential for improving travel times, road safety, and economic activity in the area.

By targeting large Chinese construction companies, the Kenyan government appears to be seeking experienced international firms with the technical capacity and financial strength to deliver complex infrastructure projects. Chinese contractors have played a major role in Kenya’s road, rail, and port developments in recent years, often backed by significant funding and experience in handling large-scale works across Africa.

The invitation to bid signals the government’s commitment to pushing forward with infrastructure projects despite economic pressures. It also reflects the ongoing partnership between Kenya and China in the development of major public works.

The notice did not disclose the full scope or estimated cost of the Kiambu Road expansion, but the high financial threshold suggests that the project will be both technically demanding and financially significant.

As Kenya continues to invest in road infrastructure, the expansion of Kiambu Road is expected to enhance connectivity between urban and peri-urban areas, support local businesses, and improve access to Nairobi for thousands of commuters. Prequalification will serve as the first step in identifying qualified contractors capable of undertaking the project to international standards.
