Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has described his team’s dramatic UEFA Super Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur as nothing short of a “miracle.”
The French champions triumphed 4-3 on penalties in Italy on Wednesday after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regular time. Tottenham appeared to be cruising to victory, with goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero giving them a comfortable lead up to the 84th minute.
However, PSG mounted a late comeback through substitutes Goncalo Ramos and Lee Kang-in, whose quick-fire goals stunned Spurs and forced the match into a tense penalty shootout. In the end, the Ligue 1 side held their nerve to edge out the Premier League club.
Speaking to PSG TV after the match, Enrique admitted his side’s win was unexpected given the circumstances. “How crazy! That is the word, crazy… I have to say I’m very happy,” he said.
The Spaniard explained that his team had only five training sessions under their belt before the final, while Tottenham had been in full preparation mode. “I don’t think we deserved to win, because the difference between a team like Tottenham, who have had a lot of training, and us… it’s so different. I think it is a miracle,” Enrique said.
The UEFA Super Cup pits the winners of the Champions League against the Europa League champions, making it one of European football’s most prestigious single-match titles. Enrique acknowledged the challenge, highlighting the quality and preparation needed to compete at such a level. “It’s difficult to play in a Super Cup final because you have to win the Champions League or the Europa League. I’m happy with my players. We’re happy, we’re champions!” he added.
For PSG, this victory marks an early-season confidence boost under Enrique’s leadership, especially after navigating a tough contest against a highly competitive Tottenham side managed by Thomas Frank. For Spurs, the loss will be a bitter pill to swallow, especially after controlling most of the match, only to let the trophy slip away in the final minutes.
The result not only hands PSG another piece of silverware but also sends a message about their resilience, even when facing adversity and limited preparation time.
