Motorists using the Thika Superhighway on Friday, August 22, should brace for heavy traffic disruptions as police set up roadblocks ahead of the Harambee Stars’ CHAN 2024 quarter-final against Madagascar at Kasarani Stadium.
In a statement, the National Police Service announced that vehicles from the city centre heading to Thika Road will be diverted to Kiambu Road at Exit 4. Motorists from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to Nairobi will instead be directed to use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road. Cars without official access passes to Kasarani will be diverted onto service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
Police have urged drivers to follow instructions from officers stationed at the diversion points, warning that those who ignore the rules will face stern action.
The measures come as Kenya prepares for its most significant football match in decades. The Harambee Stars are making their first appearance in the knockout stage of a continental tournament in 38 years. Head coach Benni McCarthy has called on his players to embrace the moment but remain composed.
“This is a massive occasion not just for the players and coaches but for the country as well,” McCarthy told reporters. “None of these players has ever been at this stage before, so the most important thing is to stay calm and not let the weight of the moment overwhelm us.”
Kenya heads into the match unbeaten after four games at Kasarani, winning three and drawing one. Madagascar, which topped a strong group featuring Morocco and DR Congo, is expected to provide tough competition.
Meanwhile, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has requested that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) lift the 60 percent stadium capacity limit at Kasarani, citing strong demand from fans. Organisers have also expanded fan zones in Nairobi and Mombasa from 10 to 13 to accommodate more supporters.
Kenya will open the quarter-final stage against Madagascar at Kasarani on Friday evening, followed by Tanzania’s clash with Morocco in Dar es Salaam. On Saturday, Uganda will face Senegal while Sudan takes on Algeria.
The semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, with the final and third-place playoff set for the following weekend.
