AC Milan has cancelled its planned move for Nigerian striker Victor Boniface after the player reportedly failed medical tests. The forward, who currently plays for German champions Bayer Leverkusen, had arrived in Milan within the last 48 hours to complete the transfer.
The deal was expected to go through under terms that included a €5 million loan fee with an additional €24 million option to buy. However, the agreement collapsed after Boniface was unable to clear mandatory fitness examinations. The development was confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Sunday, who wrote that the striker’s condition had led to the cancellation. “Despite verbal agreement for €5m loan fee and €24m buy clause with player in Milano in the last 48h, deal called off due to medical. Boniface, returning in Germany today,” Romano stated.
Reports indicate that Boniface’s injury history raised serious concerns for Milan. The 24-year-old has undergone two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgeries and has also struggled with recurring groin injuries. These fitness issues have frequently limited his availability in recent seasons, leaving potential buyers cautious.
Milan are not the first Italian club to step back from a possible deal involving the Nigerian international. Earlier, Roma reportedly declined a swap offer involving Boniface and Ukrainian forward Artem Dovbyk over similar worries about his fitness.
For Boniface, the setback marks another frustrating turn in his career at a time when he was gaining attention for his performances in Germany. While his talent and physical presence as a striker remain clear, his durability at the highest level continues to be questioned.
The cancelled transfer also leaves AC Milan still searching for attacking reinforcements. The club had been looking to bolster its front line, and Boniface was viewed as a potential solution given his proven ability to score and hold up play. However, the risk tied to his injury record was ultimately deemed too high.
The collapse of the deal underlines how crucial medical examinations are in modern football transfers, especially when players carry a history of serious injuries. For now, Boniface will return to Leverkusen as Milan continues its hunt for a new striker.
