Arsenal kicked off their 2025-26 Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, securing an important away victory to begin the season.
The decisive goal came from Riccardo Calafiori, who capitalized on a costly mistake by United’s stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Despite United’s efforts to respond, they could not break through Arsenal’s defense, leaving the visitors to claim all three points.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed the result as a statement win, particularly given the difficulty of opening the season at Old Trafford. He praised his squad’s determination and resilience, stressing that while the performance was not perfect, the team’s fighting spirit made the difference.
“A great result,” Arteta said. “We have the hunger, desire, and ability to win. We were clearly not at our best but found a way through. To come here and win, I am very proud of that.”
The Arsenal boss also highlighted the contribution of new signings Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, and Martin Zubimendi, who all made their debuts. While admitting that some were not yet at full fitness, Arteta was confident they would grow into vital roles this season.
On the other side, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed frustration at the loss but insisted his side had shown enough positives to build on. He argued United were the better team on the day and only undone by one unusual goal.
“It was really hard because I think we showed we were the better team,” Amorim said. “A strange goal decided it, but the players fought hard. We need to improve small details, like defending set pieces, but I am proud of their bravery.”
Amorim, who only recently took charge of United, urged his players to maintain their intensity and adapt quickly to his style of play. Despite the disappointment, he was upbeat about the team’s progress, insisting that the spirit shown would pay off in future matches.
Arsenal will next face Leeds United on Saturday, while Manchester United look to bounce back against Fulham on Sunday as both teams continue their opening run of fixtures.
