Captain of Nigeria’s women’s national football team, Rasheedat Ajibade, says the Super Falcons have not received the $100,000 cash gift promised by President Bola Tinubu after their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) victory in Morocco.
The pledge was made during a reception held to celebrate the team’s continental triumph. At the event, President Tinubu promised each player and coaching staff member $100,000, a house, and a national honour. The announcement was widely publicised as part of the government’s recognition of the team’s achievement.
However, Ajibade revealed in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, posted on Instagram on Thursday, that none of the commitments have been honoured. “We have not received our money, but hopefully, it would be paid,” she said. “They have not paid, all the promises, we have not received anything.”
The Super Falcons, who have long been a dominant force in African women’s football, secured the WAFCON title after an impressive campaign in Morocco, cementing their reputation as one of the most successful teams on the continent. Their victory was seen as a morale booster for women’s sports in Nigeria, with many hoping that the President’s promises would mark a turning point in how female athletes are rewarded and recognised.
Instead, Ajibade’s remarks have stirred disappointment among fans and raised questions about the government’s commitment to fulfilling such pledges. The delay in delivering the rewards has also brought renewed attention to the long-standing issues of funding and support for women’s sports in Nigeria.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that, just a week after making the pledge to the Falcons, President Tinubu announced similar rewards for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their success in continental competition. While both announcements were met with applause at the time, Ajibade’s revelation suggests that the promises remain unfulfilled.
For now, the players and coaching staff are left waiting, with hopes that the federal government will eventually deliver on its commitments. Until then, the Super Falcons’ victory celebrations remain incomplete, overshadowed by the uncertainty surrounding the rewards they were promised.
