‘Sultana’ Actress Winnie Bwire Succumbs to Cancer After Battling the Disease for Two Years

The family of actress Winnie Bwire Ndubi, popularly known as ‘Dida’ from Citizen TV's hit series Sultana, has announced her passing after a two-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Bwire, who was undergoing treatment in Turkey, passed away just a month after appealing for financial help to continue her treatment.

Bwire had fought bravely against the disease, going public about her diagnosis in 2022. Her condition had worsened in recent months, leading to her appeal for Sh5 million to seek further treatment abroad. Despite the best efforts of her doctors, Bwire succumbed to the illness.

A graduate of Makerere University with a degree in Industrial Fine Art and Design, Bwire’s talents were multifaceted. From a young age, she wrote poems and plays and later blossomed into a career in acting, scriptwriting, songwriting, painting, and interior design. Her acting career took off in 2014 with her first professional screenplay in a project called Penzi. She later gained fame through her roles in Kalimani Dynasty and Sultana.

Bwire’s story has deeply resonated with fans, as she faced the challenges of cancer with resilience and courage. In late 2023, she publicly appealed for financial support to cover her medical costs, with a goal of raising Sh7 million. Despite the generosity of supporters, her health continued to decline as the side effects of her medication became unbearable.
