Kounde’s Extra-Time Strike Wins Copa del Rey for Barcelona

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde scored late in extra-time to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final. This win gave Barcelona their first major trophy under new manager Hansi Flick and extended their record to 32 Spanish Cup titles.

Pedri opened the scoring for Barcelona with a stunning strike after a sharp move initiated by Pau Cubarsi’s interception and Lamine Yamal’s skillful assist. Barcelona had the better start, dominating possession and creating several chances, including a corner from Dani Olmo that struck the post.

Real Madrid, who were already dealing with several injuries, faced more problems when Ferland Mendy was forced off early with a thigh injury. Fran Garcia came on to replace him, tasked with stopping Barcelona’s lively teenager Lamine Yamal, who impressed with his blond hair and dynamic runs.

Madrid’s top scorer Kylian Mbappe was not fit to start due to an ankle problem but was introduced at halftime. His arrival sparked a comeback, with Mbappe himself and Aurelien Tchouameni scoring quick goals in the second half to put Madrid ahead.

Barcelona, however, fought back. Ferran Torres equalised in the 84th minute to force extra-time, where Kounde then scored the decisive goal. His strike ensured Barcelona remained on course for a historic quadruple this season.

The match ended with rising tensions as Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger was shown a red card after allegedly throwing an object at the referee. Lucas Vázquez also received a red card for dissent in the heated final moments.

Speaking after the match, Ferran Torres told La 1, “It was a good time to bring joy to our fans; we have to enjoy it, but without forgetting the Champions League semis are coming,” referring to their upcoming clash with Inter Milan.

Coach Hansi Flick, who has now won all seven finals he has coached, praised his team and said, “They can make a party for today; it’s OK.”

Despite Real Madrid’s second-half surge, Barcelona’s resilience secured a memorable win in a fiery and action-packed final.
