Police Deny Role in Protester Juliet Wangai’s Death in Custody

The National Police Service has denied any wrongdoing in the death of Juliet Wangai Kariuki, a 24-year-old woman who died while in custody at Nanyuki GK Prison after being arrested during the July 7 Saba Saba demonstrations.

Wangai was among 126 protesters detained in Nanyuki during the nationwide protests, which were largely youth-led and aimed at pushing for economic reforms and government accountability. She was taken to court the next day and charged with malicious damage to property under Section 339(1) of the Penal Code. Like the others, she pleaded not guilty and was offered a Sh50,000 cash bail.

However, her family was unable to raise the bail, so she remained in remand at Nanyuki Prison. The police have stated that she was in “good health” when she appeared in court.

In a statement issued on Monday, National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said that despite reports suggesting misconduct, no official complaint has been filed against any officer involved in Wangai’s arrest or detention. “To date, no formal complaint has been recorded alleging any misconduct, whether by commission or omission,” Nyaga stated.

He also assured the public that the matter would be investigated thoroughly and fairly by independent oversight bodies. “Should any wrongdoing be found, appropriate accountability will follow,” he added.

Even with the police denying responsibility, public anger continues to grow. On Monday, residents of Nanyuki protested in the streets, demanding justice for Wangai and transparency in the investigation. Anti-riot police were deployed across town as the demonstrations gained momentum.

Eyewitnesses have come forward claiming Wangai was not actively involved in the protests when she was arrested, saying she was on her way home at the time. Her death has drawn strong reactions from civil society groups, many of which are now calling for an independent investigation into the incident.

Wangai’s case has become a symbol of broader frustrations over police actions during public protests. With pressure mounting, her death is fueling louder calls for justice system reforms and greater accountability from law enforcement agencies.
