Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, wife of the NDC’s presidential candidate John Mahama, recently visited key markets in Kumasi to campaign for her husband ahead of the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. During her visit, she engaged directly with traders, promoting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and outlining the party’s plans to support local businesses.
Her first stop was at the Racecourse Market, where she took part in an energizing walk-through, interacting with traders and listening to their concerns. Mrs. Mahama took the opportunity to address rumors that John Mahama would cancel the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy if elected. She firmly denied these claims, assuring the traders that her husband had no plans to abolish the program. Instead, she emphasized that John Mahama aims to improve the policy to better serve the country’s youth.
"Some people are going around telling mothers that my husband will cancel the free SHS policy when he becomes president. I assure you, as his wife, he has not said that anywhere," she stated. "He has great plans to improve the policy to make it better."
Encouraging voters to reject false information, Mrs. Mahama urged the traders to vote for John Mahama and NDC parliamentary candidates, stressing the importance of securing a parliamentary majority for the party’s development agenda. She expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the traders, calling the moment unforgettable.
Mrs. Mahama continued her campaign at Kejetia Market, where she highlighted NDC initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women and children. Key policies included the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank, a National Apprenticeship Programme, and a fee-free policy for first-year university students. Despite an attempt to disrupt the event by cutting the power, the program proceeded smoothly.
Other NDC speakers at the event assured the traders that a future NDC government would complete phase two of the Kejetia Market project and upgrade the Racecourse Market to provide shelter from the sun. Earlier, Mrs. Mahama met with market representatives to discuss their challenges and how NDC policies could support small businesses, especially with affordable loans.
