Peter Kwakye-Ackah, the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has announced his decision to withdraw his bid as an independent candidate for the upcoming December elections. This move follows a recent ruling by the Sekondi High Court, which dismissed an injunction application against the candidacy of Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The court's ruling, delivered on November 11, 2024, affirmed Joana Gyan's eligibility to run in the 7 December polls. As a result, the Electoral Commission confirmed that she would be included on the ballot. In a statement issued on Monday, November 18, Kwakye-Ackah explained that the court’s decision made his earlier decision to contest the election independently unnecessary.
“Pursuant to the decision by the High Court and the Electoral Commission to clear the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for this year’s election, I believe that my reasons for filing to contest the election as an independent candidate are no longer tenable,” Kwakye-Ackah said. He expressed his gratitude to the elders and other party members for their guidance, which led him to reconsider his candidacy in favor of party unity.
Kwakye-Ackah’s withdrawal has sparked a positive response from Joana Gyan Cudjoe. In her statement, Cudjoe welcomed the incumbent MP’s decision and called on party supporters to put aside any past grievances. She urged them to embrace Kwakye-Ackah’s return to the NDC fold as a sign of unity and strength for the party as they head into the elections.
The NDC has been gearing up for the December elections, and Kwakye-Ackah’s decision is seen as a step toward ensuring party cohesion as they aim to retain the Sekondi parliamentary seat.
