Abdirahman Mohammed Abdullahi, leader of Somaliland's opposition Wadani Party, has been elected president in a decisive victory over incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi. This marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the self-declared republic, with Abdullahi securing 64% of the vote. He received 407,908 ballots compared to Bihi's 225,519, which accounted for 35% of the total.
The Somaliland National Electoral Commission (SNEC), chaired by Musa Hassan, confirmed the results. Faysal Ali, representing the Union for Integration and Development (UID) Party, finished a distant third with just 4,699 votes.
Abdullahi’s victory comes after years of growing dissatisfaction with President Bihi, who extended his tenure by two years beyond his official term, sparking public frustration and calls for leadership renewal. Bihi initially assumed office in 2017. Abdullahi's win is widely regarded as a mandate for change, reflecting Somalilanders' desire for political reform and fresh governance.
Somaliland, a self-declared independent state that separated from Somalia in 1991, has long been recognized for its democratic stability despite lacking international recognition. This election reinforces its reputation for peaceful political transitions, even as it continues to face challenges on the global stage. Most countries still regard Somaliland as part of Somalia, limiting its diplomatic and economic opportunities.
In his victory speech, Abdullahi emphasized unity, economic development, and intensifying the pursuit of international recognition for Somaliland. He pledged to foster inclusive governance and steer the region toward a brighter future. Abdullahi’s leadership is expected to focus on addressing both internal challenges, such as economic disparities and governance issues, and external goals like gaining global acceptance as a sovereign state.
As Somaliland moves forward, the election is seen as a pivotal moment, symbolizing hope for progress and renewed optimism among its citizens. The peaceful transfer of power underscores the region's commitment to democracy, despite the ongoing struggle for international acknowledgment of its independence.
Abdullahi’s victory has sparked excitement among supporters who see his leadership as an opportunity for Somaliland to strengthen its democratic institutions and secure a more prosperous future.
