Ibrahim Gusau, president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has been elected the first vice president of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B. The election took place on Friday during the CAF African Schools Football Championship WAFU B qualifying tournament in Niamey.
This leadership reshuffle also saw Kurt Edwin-Simeon Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association, emerge as the new president of WAFU B. Oumarou Sawadogo, president of the Burkinabe Football Federation, was elected as the second vice president.
Gusau’s election highlights Nigeria’s strong influence in West African football. His new role is expected to strengthen collaboration among member nations and support the development of football across the region. WAFU B comprises seven football federations, including those of Nigeria, Ghana, and Burkina Faso.
The leadership changes align with broader efforts to enhance football governance and promote competitions within the subregion. Under this new structure, the union aims to tackle challenges facing West African football while creating more opportunities for growth and engagement.
As the first vice president, Gusau will work closely with the new president and other executive members to advance WAFU B’s objectives. His responsibilities will likely include enhancing youth development programs, improving infrastructure, and boosting the visibility of West African football on the continental stage.
This election marks a significant moment for the region’s football governance, as the newly elected leaders are tasked with driving positive change and ensuring the continued success of WAFU B. With Gusau’s proven leadership at the NFF, his contributions are anticipated to have a lasting impact on football across the subregion.
The ongoing CAF African Schools Football Championship served as an ideal platform to showcase the potential of grassroots football development, which remains a core focus for WAFU B under its new leadership. As these changes take effect, fans and stakeholders across West Africa are optimistic about a bright future for the sport in the region
