Kenya has strongly denied allegations of involvement in the disappearance of Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. Besigye, a vocal critic of Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, vanished in Nairobi on Saturday, November 16, raising concerns over his safety and possible cross-border political interference.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Sing’oei Korir dismissed claims that Kenyan authorities were part of the alleged abduction, describing them as baseless. “There is no reason whatsoever for Kenya to be a party in his arrest, if any,” Korir stated. He emphasized Kenya’s non-involvement, calling for evidence to back such accusations.
Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, executive director of UNAIDS, revealed on social media that her husband was abducted while attending a book launch in Nairobi. She claims Besigye is now being held in a military detention facility in Kampala, Uganda. Byanyima expressed outrage, questioning why he was being held in a military prison, stating, “He is not a soldier. Why is he being held in a military jail?”
Efforts by Besigye’s family and legal team to contact him have reportedly been obstructed, heightening fears over his well-being. His disappearance has drawn parallels to previous incidents of Ugandan security forces targeting political opponents on foreign soil. Earlier this year, 36 Ugandan political activists were arrested in Kisumu, Kenya, during a workshop and forcibly transported back to Uganda. Those activists were charged with treason but have since been released on bail, maintaining their innocence.
Besigye, a prominent figure in Ugandan politics, has unsuccessfully contested four presidential elections against Museveni. His persistent opposition to Museveni’s government has often made him a target
