Freeman Mbowe, the leader of Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, was arrested on Friday, just days before the November 27 local elections. His detention followed the violent dispersal of a Chadema rally, where security forces used tear gas to break up the gathering. Chadema condemned the arrest, accusing authorities of suppressing opposition activities and tampering with the electoral process.
According to reports, Mbowe was detained after police ambushed a Chadema convoy in Halungu Forest, located in southwest Tanzania. Officers stopped the convoy, forcibly opened car doors, and took party leaders into custody without explaining the reasons for the arrest or revealing their location. Chadema’s Director of Communication and Foreign Affairs, John Mrema, said this incident came after police had earlier blocked Mbowe from addressing supporters at a rally in Mlowo. The crowd at the rally was also dispersed using tear gas.
The arrests come amid Chadema’s protests over the disqualification of many of its candidates from the upcoming elections. Mbowe previously accused authorities of “deliberate manipulation,” which he said reduced Chadema’s candidate pool from an expected 65% of the 80,430 posts to just 33%. This has sparked concerns about the fairness of the elections, widely seen as a test of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership since taking office in 2021.
President Suluhu Hassan, who succeeded John Magufuli, initially raised hopes for democratic reforms. However, recent actions, including Chadema’s accusations of repression, have led to growing criticism from human rights groups and international observers. The local elections are now viewed as a measure of whether her administration will uphold democratic values or continue authoritarian practices associated with her predecessor.
Despite these challenges, Chadema has vowed to remain in the race. Mbowe has consistently affirmed the party’s commitment to contesting the elections, emphasizing the importance of grassroots leadership for Tanzania’s future. “We cannot afford to let the country go without leadership at the grassroots level. We will fight until the end,” Mbowe stated.
Chadema has called for the immediate release of Mbowe and other detained leaders, labeling the arrests as unjust. With international attention focused on Tanzania, the rising tensions surrounding the local elections may set the tone for the country’s presidential elections next year.
