Evans Kidero Appointed Chair of Kenya National Trading Corporation

President William Ruto has named former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero as the Chairperson of the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC). The appointment, announced in a gazette notice on November 15, 2024, marks the start of Kidero's three-year term, effective immediately. This role positions Kidero at the helm of a state corporation critical to Kenya’s trade and economic strategies.

The appointment comes following the revocation of Hussein Tene Debasso’s tenure as chairperson. Kidero’s return to public service is seen as both a political comeback and a strategic move by President Ruto. The KNTC plays a key role in managing trade, ensuring price stability, and promoting the distribution of essential goods across Kenya

Evans Kidero’s political career has been marked by notable highs and challenges. Serving as Nairobi Governor from 2013 to 2017, his administration undertook significant infrastructure projects, although his tenure was clouded by governance hurdles. After losing his re-election bid in 2017 to Mike Sonko, Kidero shifted focus to his rural base, contesting for the Homa Bay gubernatorial seat in 2022. He lost to Gladys Wanga, an ODM candidate, highlighting the party's dominance in the region.

President Ruto’s administration has given Kidero a renewed platform. Though initially nominated for the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) position in the Ministry of Trade, his appointment did not materialize. This setback did not deter Kidero, whose new role as KNTC chair signals another chance to contribute to Kenya’s economic policies.

KNTC is tasked with facilitating trade, stabilizing prices, and ensuring the availability of essential goods in the local and export markets. It is pivotal in supporting government efforts to reduce the cost of living and promote economic development. Kidero’s extensive experience in both public service and the private sector equips him to navigate the complexities of this mandate.

As chairperson, Kidero will oversee initiatives to streamline the distribution of agricultural and industrial products and bolster trade partnerships. His leadership comes at a time when Kenya is striving to enhance its position in regional and global trade.

Kidero’s appointment is not without scrutiny. His tenure as Nairobi Governor faced allegations of mismanagement and corruption, though he has consistently denied these claims. As he steps into this influential role, he will need to demonstrate strong leadership and align with President Ruto’s economic priorities.

Despite past controversies, Kidero’s return to a prominent government role underscores his resilience and relevance in Kenyan politics. The coming years will test his ability to drive impactful change at KNTC, contributing to Kenya’s broader economic goals while cementing his legacy in public service.

This appointment reflects not just a personal victory for Kidero but also a strategic move for the Ruto administration to strengthen Kenya’s trade framework.
