Chidimma Adetshina, Nigeria's representative at the 73rd Miss Universe competition, celebrated a historic achievement on Sunday after finishing as the first runner-up at the prestigious global pageant held in Mexico City.
The dramatic final moments at the Arena CDMX saw a thrilling showdown between Adetshina and Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig. Ultimately, Theilvig claimed the crown, succeeding Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
Adetshina expressed her excitement and pride in an interview shared by the Miss Universe Nigeria organization on X.com. “I’m so excited. I don’t have words to describe what I’m feeling right now, but I’m so proud of myself, and I just made history!” she said.
Her remarkable performance in the competition, which featured 126 contestants from across the globe, including 18 African nations, earned her widespread admiration from the judges and audience. Adetshina’s grace, charisma, and confidence stood out as she represented Nigeria on the international stage.
Her path to this success, however, was not without its challenges. Earlier this year, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition after advancing to the final stage due to a controversy surrounding her nationality. Despite this setback, she remained determined to pursue her dreams in pageantry.
Soon after, she received an invitation to participate in Miss Universe Nigeria, where she represented Taraba State and emerged as the winner. Her resilience and determination led her to shine at the global competition in Mexico.
Adetshina’s achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a proud moment for Nigeria, highlighting the talent and determination of Nigerian women on the global stage.
While the crown ultimately went to Denmark, Adetshina’s success as first runner-up cements her place in the history of Miss Universe as one of the most outstanding contestants of the year.
